Synth1 is in my opinion the best free VST available. It is a must have in anyone's collection.

Features:
  1. 2 Oscillators, FM modulation, ring modulation, sync, modulation envelope.
  2. 4 types of filters, distortion.

  4. Arpeggiator (synchronized with host).
  5. Tempo delay (synchronized with host), stereo chorus/flanger.
  6. Legato mode, portamento.
  7. 16 notes polyphony.
  8. 128 presets.
  9. Thoroughly optimized for light CPU load using SSE instructions, etc.
  10. Automation.
